An ICT Summer School for Year 10 Gifted & Talented students has been arranged by the Local Authority and Wigan & Leigh College. This is planned to take place from Monday 14th July (last week of term) through to Friday 25th July (first week of the holidays). Places are extremely limited - only 16 are available throughout the entire region, so if you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Mr Doran (01257 422265 or doranc@standishchs.wigan.sch.uk) as a matter of urgency. Parents of students must agree to allow their child to attend both weeks of the summer school. NB. For this type of intensive course, we would expect the students who attend to have a sound grasp of basic ICT skills and who are enthusiastic.
The Summer School course is designed for students who want to pursue careers in IT and gain practical knowledge of how a computer works. Students who complete this course will be able to describe the internal components of a computer, assemble a computer sytem, install an operating system, and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic software. They will also be able to connect computers to the Internet and share resources in a networked environment. This course provides an excellent introduction to the IT industry and interactive exposure to PC's, hardware and operating systems. Students participate in hands-on activities and lab-based learning to become familiar with various hardware and software components and discover best practices in maintenance and safety. Students are also able to access the complete course curriculum online and can work on aspects of the course in their own time.
Pupils attending will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink each day. Days will commence at 9.15am and finish at 3.30pm. The venue is the Cisco Rooms (room 324) at the Parson's Walk campus, Wigan. |
